The second day of The Academy highlighted a common theme attributable to the success of the professionals I have encountered: unwavering dedication to improving our community. Representative David Richardson is such an example. We had the pleasure to learn of Mr. Richardson’s contributions to the reform of Florida’s correctional system. His commitment and passion materialized into actual changes in the system. The attorneys at Bilzin Sumberg are no different; they have shared with us valuable insight into their careers and the choices that have lead them to success. Fueled by their desire to implement changes that would improve our beloved city, our attorneys have made a significant impact in Miami and forged valuable relationships along the way.

A significant part of the legal profession involves engaging with your community and developing your network. As such, Scott Baena, Brian Bilzin, Jennifer Junger, and Anthony De Yurre shared with us invaluable advice based on each of their unique networking strategies and experiences. Similar to the commitment necessary to impact your community, developing worthwhile relationships requires an investment of your time and efforts. As first-year associates, we are interested in refining our networking skills to ensure that we maximize the opportunities to expand our network. In our networking seminar, we learned of various opportunities and methods to develop valuable relationships based on the experiences of Bilzin Sumberg attorneys who are all at different stages in their careers. “Working a Room” involves taking a real interest in the discussion with individuals whom you want to learn more about, as well as a continuing desire to develop such relationships.

We concluded our second, eventful day of The Academy with happy hour at the SLS Brickell. We had the opportunity to catch up with the attorneys in our Recruiting Committee, as well as implement some of the networking strategies we learned. Scott Baena and Jay Sakalo shared with me some wonderful stories about the history of Bilzin Sumberg. The history of our firm zeroed in on many of the takeaways from our course offerings during day 2 of The Academy – making a meaningful impact on your community and cultivating relationships can lead to great success.

Anthony, Jennifer, Brendan and Jessica on their first day as associates

Today, we are delighted to welcome back the 2015 bloggers!  Jennifer, Jessica, Anthony and Brendan joined the firm today as first year associates.  With law school and the bar exam behind them, they are embarking on their legal careers and we are excited to begin this journey with them.  Their beginning also marks the beginning of an exciting new program at Bilzin Sumberg called The Academy for Professional Development.

Faced with a new generation of associates with a voracious appetite for hands-on training and a keen interest in becoming integral members of the community in which we practice, as well as new demands and expectations by clients that transcend conventional law school training, Bilzin Sumberg has established The Academy for Professional Development.

They’ll be blogging about it along the way and we can’t wait to share this experience with you!

2014 Summer Associates
From Left to Right: Leah Aaronson, Desiree Fernandez, Jared Spector, Jerry Goldsmith and Anosh Zaghi.

Bilzin Sumberg is thrilled to welcome our 2014 Summer Associate class on their first day of the program today.  To learn more about our 2014 Summer Associates, click here.

The Summer Associates spent the first day of their 9 week program in orientation, which included an introduction to the different firm departments, an overview of what they can expect during their summer including mentoring, assignments, evaluationstraining, social events and a personal welcome from the hiring partner, Marshall Pasternack.

In addition to the traditional professional development trainings & social events like the real estate mock transaction and the summer associate alumni Two Chefs private cooking event, we are most excited about the new events that have been introduced this year.  Some of my personal favorites include the fishing trip to Key Largo, the Wynwood Culinary Tour and the meal service benefitting the Chapman Partnership.  Stay tuned to learn more about this year’s program from our newest bloggers!  Welcome!

L to R: Amy, Kyle, David, Shalia and Michael pose for a picture after orientation.

Yesterday, we welcomed the complete 2014 First Year Associate class (a.k.a., The First Bloggers).  Bilzin Sumberg is delighted to have David, Michael, Kyle, Amy and Shalia joining us full time as associates.  I’ll have some even more exciting news about them, later this week!

First Day! L to R – Om Pandya, Eryca Schiffman, Veronica Gordon, Naomi Alzate, Carly Grimm and Adam Fischer

Today we officially welcomed the 2013 Summer Associates!

Most of the day was spent in orientation, but they’ll be picking up assignments tomorrow and blogging by the end of the week.  This year, I am most excited about the changes to our real estate mock transaction – maybe you’ll even see a blog post or two about the revamped program.

Right now, the focus is on getting them integrated, acquainted with their mentor, and settled.  And there are plenty of assignments awaiting them. . .
